Unit #1- Week #2
Objectives This Week: The objectives this week include students evaluating their own ecological footprint and the footprint of the United States versus other countries. Students will complete a word cloud based on the video, "The Human Footprint" by National Geographic. In addition, students will complete a laboratory activities on the Tragedy of the Commons. They will discuss how we are using resources and continue with our study of sustainability.
The second half of the week will review how scientists use the scientific method to study environmental issues. We will discuss the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Case Study and use the information to understand challenges in environmental studies. We will then look at the Coyote Case Study and use it to learn how to conduct a scientific study on an environmental issue. The students will have to make a decision based on data analysis and advise others based on their conclusion. The final draft of the report will include a business letter to the Nature Conservancy, advising them about the coyote study results.
Monday will conclude unit #1 with an introduction to FRQ (Free Response Questions) and a practice FRQ #1. Students will be given instructions, advice on how to write an FRQ and one question to practice. They will then peer grade using a rubric and teacher guidance, discuss and ask questions based on the grading criterion.
